A sprayed mark is placed at each defect either along the edge of the web or in individual lanes across the web. The dye mark is adjustable in length, is available in any color (including invisible), and can be used for all substrates from paper to silicon-coated films.  Ultimately, operators and/or sensors can see the marks and take corrective actions to inspect or remove the defects.
